Dev 2's come away with a win against Leicester!

On Wednesday Development 2’s arrived at the Sports Hub to play Leicester’s Development team. This was the same team who the Development 1’s had played a week prior and had beat 70-12, so we were feeling confident. However, this confidence took a knock when 13 girls turned up to play, one short of two teams, and only two of these girls were recognisable from the squad the 1’s had played - we started to worry not only would they have the upper hand of subbing on fresh players for essentially every position on the court, compared to the nine girls we had ready to play, but also now we had no idea of the ability of our opposition.

The first quarter got off to a fairly shaky start, it took us time to adjust into our match play, trying to implement centre passes and set plays we had learnt in training on Saturday from our new coach , Amy. We game away from the first quarter 7-5 to us. Now we had taken the time to make some mistakes in terms of spacing, we were ready to come back even stronger.

The girl of the game undoubtedly had to be one of our fresher players, Elin. This was Elin’s first match playing GA, having played WA for the entire season up until now. Elin moved fantastically with Scarlett around the D, working together to break through a very aggressive defence.

In the second quarter our movements around the D were better and we were definitely starting to get into the swing of things, Lucy as WD and Emma as WA provided a solid centre court, sticking on their players whilst Sasha as GD held her own against another series of aggressive players, along with Nina as GK who also provided the pressure that meant even when Leicester were given the opportunity to score, our defence meant their success rate was low.

By the third quarter we started to see some substitutions from our side as Lucy came to C and Monique to WD, we began building the gap between our goal difference. Fourth quarter saw Leicester exhibiting some messy, though aggressive play, however when faced with disorganised and messy play we also made a few silly mistakes of our own. All in all it was a successful match for the twos, after a nervous start we came away with a very happy win of 26-12!
