The 12th January saw UWWNC’s development squad travel to RAF Cosford on a super posh coach with tables and USB ports. We got to the sports centre we and were greeted by a troupe of women who were taller than us, fitter than us, and drove better cars. These women had their lives together.
First up were our Dev 1s playing the RAF squad. The match started remarkably well with Warwick going 2 nil up in the first minute. Sadly this was not a theme that continued, as the Air Force showed great ability throughout the court. Ivie and Hazel began their strong defensive spree that continued throughout the game. By the end of the first quarter the score was 7-3 to Cosford. The second quarter saw a marked improvement for Warwick with strong play from all players. Phoebe, Lauren and Catherine worked well in the centre third and helped secure a second quarter score of 14-7.
Quarter 3 was dramatic. Abi came on as WD and was flying round the court (no pun intended). An injury for Georgia in the last two minutes saw Megan making her brief 1s debut. End score 26-11 to Cosford. The final quarter really showed the difference in fitness levels between the two teams - which is easier when you have a new centre each quarter. Nevertheless these women are machines. Lauren joined Xanthe as GA and scored the final two goals to finish 43-13. Warwick put up a good fight and there was some excellent netball.
After a brief intermission it was time for Dev 2s to take to the floor. They started with a positive attitude and confident that, while they may not have a landslide victory, some brilliant netball was about to be played. The match began as expected: a well fought battle against a strong RAF side. Emma brought the most excitement to the quarter as she won a toss up in the final few minutes. I’ve never squealed so much in such a situation. The opening quarter finished 13-3 to Cosford.
Unfortunately we couldn’t claw back the difference in quarter two but the line up on court was changed and Warwick continued to show good netball technique, but again their fitness outshone ours. Second quarter score 30-5.
After giving an inspirational pep talk at half time, the 2s were prepped for the second half, and I was considering a career in life coaching. Quarter three was the best quarter of the match with the least goals conceded and the most scored. Circle defence were tipping interceptions and jumping for rebounds throughout, working well with Jasmine to get the ball back up the court. Unfortunately, RAF Cosford went on to win the match 54-11.
Special mention to Charlotte who made her development debut in a really tough match and showed exceptional promise as WD. Also to our birthday girl Olivia!
